Jenny Pearce

Contemporary and traditional willow baskets

Jenny is a willow basketmaker, originally from Dublin, now based in rural Herefordshire. Her work is based on Celtic and English regional techniques creating both traditional and contemporary baskets, working to commission and exhibiting in galleries and craft fairs throughout Southern England. Jenny also teaches regular basketmaking workshops for both beginners and those developing their basketry skills.

As well as exhibiting with the Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen, Jenny is a member of Artistree in Ledbury (a gallery organised by local artists and craftsworkers). She is also a member of The Basketmakers Association and the Irish Basketmakers Association.

Most of her willow is sourced in Somerset, but Jenny also grows a small amount of her own – currently having thirteen different varieties. She makes her baskets with unstripped willow, favouring the natural texture and variety of colour in the bark.

Her workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some experience. The aim of the course is to learn some basic techniques and in the process, produce a basket to take home. Over a weekend you could expect to make 2 baskets, one possibly with a handle. Generally, there are 8/9 places on a course, to ensure that everyone receives lots of support. Complete beginners are advised to attend at least two round basketmaking courses before attempting ovalwork.
